Wren Estate is based in Mt. Camel, which lies in the heart of Central Heathcote, 10 minutes north of the town of Heathcote. Heathcote is famous for producing world class Shiraz and more recently alternate varietals. Wren Estate wines are produced from the home block and the 52 ha property also features an olive grove from which olives and olive oil are also produced.
The vines that are now around 20 years old produce wine of elegance, balance, individual character and at will show both prettiness and power depending on the block. The philosophy at Wren Estate is small batch winemaking and incorporating the best of Old and New World winemaking techniques, that winemaker Michael Wren has picked up in his more than 20 vintages around the world. The vineyard comprises Shiraz, Merlot, Malbec and Marsanne.
Blessed with a vineyard containing 16 different rootstock/clone combinations of Shiraz, this sets the script for the Wren Estate wines. In order to retain the individual character of each rootstock/clone combination Michael separates each into its own block and each block is handpicked, separately fermented and barrel aged even though some of the smaller blocks may only produce 2 barrels of wine. The intricacies and variations of the single blocks can best be seen in the single block range of wines that only make it into this range if they show the highest quality, balance and character. Rather than approaching each batch with the same plan, Michael lets the fruit dictate the winemaking and each batch will be cared for in the way that will best show it’s true character.
